Denim For Diabetes - School Day

We are offering you a unique opportunity to participate in our “Denim for Diabetes” School Project. Diabetes South Africa is a registered Non-profit (000-795) / public benefit organization (930014852). We run many projects and programs to promote awareness about prevention and management of diabetes, which includes: camps for children with diabetes, workshops for newly diagnosed patients, cookery demos, support groups, community wellness days and corporate health days. 14th November is World Diabetes Day.

We have implemented a fun, fundraising initiative called Denim for Diabetes – It’s in your genes’ This initiative involves your school hosting a casual day for us where the pupils wear an item of denim in exchange for a small donation of R10. The donation will be split between the school, R2, and our organization, R8, to assist with fundraising.(this cost is only for the Johannesburg branch)   We have printed stickers, which read, “I’ve escaped my uniform! Denim for Diabetes Day and Diabetes SA”. We have also designed a poster for the schools to display, advertising the event. The school will also receive an educational DVD on Diabetes which can be used within the school, and we can assist in a talk on diabetes.

We are focusing on the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise in the management of diabetes and the prevention of Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes usually develops in adults, but with the rise of obesity in children over the last decade, it is now developing in young people and children.

We are just starting the project and our aim is for the program to be ongoing and sustainable throughout South Africa. We also hope to encourage other schools to start to raise awareness in order to reach as many schools as possible with this Diabetes Awareness project to both teachers and learners. Hence the role of our school based intervention program “Denim for Diabetes” in educating and heightening awareness.

Diabetes South African hereby requests the opportunity to add value to the students who are diabetic as well as educating those who are not and do not understand what diabetes is.  Therefore Diabetes South Africa would be an asset to the school, students and staff.

However, due to school exams and other commitments within the school environment, we are aware that it may not be practical to hold it in November; it is therefore up to the management of the school to determine a suitable date during the year.
