South Africa's Global Run/Walk: The Story So Far...
Cape Town participated for the first time 5 years ago, and last year at Green Point over 1700 active participants took part and over 2000 people in total joined us to take a stand against diabetes. Cape Town's Mayor Patricia de Lille opened the event and well know celebrities Liesel van der Westhuizen from SABC's Morning Expresso Show and Prof. Tim Noakes from the Sports Science Institute participated.
We had a highly successfull Run/Walk event in 2011. It comprised a beautiful scenic run/walk along the the Sea Point Promenade, fantastic live entertainment encouraging poeple to get active, healthy food stalls, massage tent and an exhibition area which included free blood pressure and glucose testing, HIV, HB, eye and foot screening. It was a huge team effort by partners, many participants and over 110 volunteers. Last year we entered our Global Diabetes Run/Walk into an international competition in the category "Creating Diabetes Awareness and Advocacy". We were so excited to be nominated as "One of the top 5 events in the World" in this category by the World Diabetes Foundation in Denmark.
Due to the Cape Town event's success, Diabetes South Africa has included the walk as part of the National Projects calendar and we are proud to announce that Diabetes SA are doing walks in Pretoria, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town this year. It is imperative that the whole of South Africa hears our call loud and clear.
